Camila Osorio of Colombia battled past third seed Alize Cornet of France 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 on the first day of the Open 6e Sens-Metropole on Monday in Lyon, France.
Osorio won despite committing 10 double faults without an ace. She saved seven of 10 break points while breaking Cornet's serve six times in 16 chances in a match that lasted two hours and 23 minutes.
No. 4 seed Petra Martic of Croatia and No. 5 seed Anastasia Potapova of Russia each bounced back from a first-set loss to advance. Martic defeated Frenchwoman Kristina Mladenovic 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 and Potapova beat Spain's Marina Bassols Ribera 4-6, 6-1, 6-2.
Other first-round winners were Egyptian sixth seed Mayar Sherif, Linda Noskova of the Czech Republic, Germany's Jule Niemeier and Belgian Maryna Zanevska.
Thailand Open
Lin Zhu of China rallied to upset countrywoman and third seed Xiyu Wang 4-6, 6-3, 6-0 in the first round in Hua Hin, Thailand.
Wang fell despite saving 16 of 22 break points. The third set was tied 3-3 before Zhu surged ahead by winning the final nine games of a match that lasted two hours and 28 minutes.
Seventh seed Xinyu Wang of China fared better, eliminating Joanne Zuger of Switzerland 6-2, 6-2.
Sweden's Mirjam Bjorklund, Slovenia's Tamara Zidansek, South Korea's Su Jeong Jang and Ukraine's Lesia Tsurenko also won their opening matches.
