DUBLIN, Ireland: A supermarket in Kildare made headlines after honoring a 5-pound voucher issued in 1999, long before Ireland adopted the euro.
The shopper, based in Athy, stumbled upon the decades-old voucher and decided to try their luck at Perry's Supermarket. To their surprise, the store accepted it without hesitation.
Store manager Noel Perry told the Kildare Nationalist, "We always said we would honor vouchers. It doesn't matter how long people have them; it is no problem."
He added that the store recently honored another voucher from 2011, valued at 100 euros.
Perry's Supermarket has been a staple in Athy for over 70 years, building a reputation for customer service and community loyalty.
Under Irish law, vouchers sold after December 2, 2019, must have either: No expiry date or a minimum validity of five years.
Customers must also be informed of the expiry date in writing or via email at the time of purchase.
However, these rules do not apply to vouchers issued before 2019—and certainly not ones from 26 years ago.
Despite this, Perry's decision to honor even the oldest vouchers shows a rare level of commitment to customer satisfaction—one that other businesses might take note of.
